Paged vs ArtCraft (DesignCraft)

Paged vs ArtCraft DesignCraft: two open-source, IDML-speaking layout tools, one a document platform with plugins, one a suite of separate Rust apps.

Tier: IntermediateIntermediateIIexplanation

How does Paged compare to ArtCraft and its page-layout app, DesignCraft?

In short ArtCraft is a suite of twelve open-source desktop apps written in Rust, each a clean-room take on one professional tool. Its page-layout app, DesignCraft, follows InDesign's workflow, is licensed MIT OR Apache-2.0, imports and exports IDML, and can be driven by agents over MCP. Paged is also open source and IDML-native, but it is one document platform: text, pictures, vectors, spreadsheets, data and web content are plugins that live in frames of the same document, with one undo and one scripting surface. Both are young. DesignCraft describes itself as pre-alpha; Paged's layout and print depth are still emerging. (Researched DesignCraft (ArtCraft) 2026-10-12; Paged’s test evidence is live.)

Verdict

  • Choose DesignCraft for a free, permissively licensed desktop app that looks and works like InDesign, with PDF/X and EPUB export and a control channel agents can drive, once it reaches its alpha.
  • Choose Paged for a document whose .paged file is a valid IDML package, a public plugin SDK, a sandboxed scripting model, and one document that mixes content types instead of one app per medium.

CapabilityPagedDesignCraft (ArtCraft)
Licensing & cost differentiator
Open source & free to use
Paged's engine is MPL-2.0 or PMEL and its editor AGPL-3.0 or PMEL; Scribus is GPL. Affinity is free-of-charge but proprietary and vendor-governed (Canva). DesignCraft (ArtCraft) is MIT OR Apache-2.0 and free.
●●●●●●
File format openness differentiator
Open, inspectable document container
Paged's .paged is always a valid IDML (ZIP) package. InDesign's .indd is closed (IDML is its interchange form). .qxp and .af are proprietary; Scribus .sla is open XML but app-specific. DesignCraft has its own documented native format.
●●●●●●
IDML interchange differentiator
Round-trips IDML with the InDesign ecosystem
InDesign defines IDML. Paged reads and writes it natively. Affinity imports IDML but cannot export it; Scribus IDML import is partial. DesignCraft imports and exports IDML; its own gap list says the round trip is not yet measured on real InDesign files.
●●●●●●
Scripting & API differentiator
Scriptable document model
Paged exposes a sandboxed paged.* ECMAScript surface (emerging). InDesign has ExtendScript/UXP; Scribus has Python; Affinity has no scripting. DesignCraft drives every command over a JSON control channel, an MCP server and a headless CLI; it has no document scripting language.
●●●●●●
Extensibility / plugins differentiator
First-class plugin platform
Paged ships a public plugin SDK (emerging). InDesign's SDK is mature but closed/paid; Quark has XTensions; Affinity has no plugins. DesignCraft documents no plugin system.
●●●●●●
Automation & data-driven publishing differentiator
Headless / data-merge / PIM-fed output
InDesign leans on InDesign Server + EasyCatalog/priint. Paged is automation-native and headless-friendly by design; parts of the batch pipeline are still landing. DesignCraft's headless CLI renders and drives documents; data merge is not documented.

●●●
Platform & delivery differentiator
Desktop, web, and headless delivery
Paged renders with WebGPU and runs in the browser as well as headless. The incumbents are desktop apps (InDesign adds a server product). DesignCraft runs natively on macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD and in the browser via WebAssembly, with a headless CLI.
●●●●●●
Layout & typography baseline
Professional page layout & typesetting
The honest gap: Paged is an emerging platform, not at the layout/typography depth of 25-year-old incumbents. Treated as baseline because every serious tool clears it. DesignCraft (pre-alpha) has a Knuth–Plass composer, threaded stories and styles, but threading text by hand is still its alpha blocker.

●●●
Color & print production baseline
CMYK, spot color, PDF/X, preflight
Scribus is notably strong here. Paged color/print production is emerging; several pieces are on the roadmap, not shipped. DesignCraft exports PDF/X-4 and PDF/A-2b with CMYK, spot colours, bleed and crop marks (per its README; pre-alpha).

One platform or one app per medium

ArtCraft splits the creative suite the way the incumbents do: PhotoCraft for images, VectorCraft for vectors, GridCraft for spreadsheets, DeckCraft for presentations, PdfCraft for PDFs, DesignCraft for layout, and more. Each is a separate application with its own format.

Paged starts from the page. A spreadsheet, a raster retouch, a vector drawing, a data-bound record or a block of HTML is a frame in the same document, laid out and rendered by the same engine:

Format and interchange

DesignCraft has its own documented native format and imports and exports IDML. Its own gap list says the IDML round trip has not yet been measured on real InDesign-authored files, and that .indd is not read yet.

Paged has no separate native format: a .paged file is always a structurally valid IDML package, so InDesign opens it directly. Unchanged parts round-trip byte for byte, and rendering is checked against InDesign's own output. See InDesign compatibility.

Automation and extensibility

DesignCraft exposes every menu item, tool, panel control and dialog over a JSON control channel and an MCP server, and ships a headless command-line tool. It documents no plugin system and no document scripting language.

Paged has a sandboxed scripting model over the document (frames, stories, styles), a command-line tool, and a public plugin SDK — the same toolkit Paged's own content types are built with. See automated publishing.

Licensing

DesignCraft and the other ArtCraft apps are MIT OR Apache-2.0. Paged's engine is MPL-2.0 or PMEL, and its editor and content plugins are AGPL-3.0 or PMEL; PMEL is the commercial licence for teams that need different terms.

Frequently asked questions

Is DesignCraft an open-source InDesign alternative? Yes. It is a clean-room, MIT/Apache-licensed reimplementation of the InDesign workflow in Rust. It is pre-alpha today.

Can DesignCraft and Paged exchange files? Through IDML. Both read and write it, and every .paged file is already an IDML package. How much survives a trip through DesignCraft has not been measured.

Which is better for agents and automation? Both are built for it. DesignCraft lets an agent drive the application's UI commands over MCP; Paged gives scripts and agents the document model itself, with undo, plus a plugin SDK to add new content types.
